What would you change?

The very definition of urban planning is to change some aspects of a place. If you could change only one thing about Corpus Christi, what would it be?

Think about:

Housing
Entertainment
Industry
Retail
Health systems
Schools and Universities
Churches
Parks and Green Spaces
Other recreational facilities
Crime and public safety
Museums and Cultural Attractions
Infrastructure

Ok, only one! What would you do?

To choose just one thing to change is tough, but given our high rates of obesity and diabetes I feel increasing the number of public parks and green spaces and taking better care of existing facilities would be a good thing. Cole Park and the Sea Wall are under utilized it seems to me and perhaps developing parks on the west and south side would make it easier for residents to exercise outside.

Defiantly downtown! Its a ghost town! There are so many abandon buildings and weedy lots! I want to see more kept up builds with fun businesses! Plus it would be good for tourism!

If I was to pick only one thing that could change in Corpus, I would have to say entertainment. People like to come to citys to be entertained and to see things and to just have a good time. Corpus right now doesn't have a whole lot to do except go to the mall, the movies, and the beach. So I think it would be good for the tourism industry if there was more things to do in Corpus.

Everything on this list implies an object or thing. We need to change our cultural attitude. Once we do that the manipulation of things (health systems, parks, industry, etc.) will follow. Crime and public safety come closest as behavior modifiers and perhaps that should get attention. I keep thinking of the "Broken Window" theory discussed in Gladwell's Tipping Point. If we don't tolerate little bad behaviors, perhaps the tide will turn favorably as it did for NYC.
